The situation in Eastern Europe has brought a new security dynamic in the region. President Putin’s swift full-scale military invasion into Ukraine has led to the gravest threat to Euro-Atlantic security since the Second World War. The outcome of the war will have an impact on, and may even transform, the face and scope of the Alliance, as well as the future of European security.

Jane Bond: Women in Intel


WIIS Netherlands and the Institute of Security and Global Affairs will be holding a special-in-person event at Leiden University on March 8, 2022, at 6:15 PM (CET) in honor of the 2022 International Women's Day Theme, #BreaktheBias. Simone Smit,Deputy Director-General of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), will discuss the role of women in the intelligence world. This event will be held in Dutch.

Navigating the Terrain of Gender Justice: A Handbook for Gender Audits at Higher Education Institutes in India


WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace), in collaboration with India International Centre, is organizing a DialogueEmbedding Gender Justice in the Academyon March 26, 2022. This event will feature an eminent panel of speakers from the fields of law, policy, higher education, and will speak to the role of Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in India’s quest for gender equality. They will share insights on a repertoire of equality concerns.


The Dialogue will culminate with the launch of a unique and innovative Handbook ‘Navigating the Terrain of Gender Justice: A Handbook for Gender Audits at Higher Education Institutes in India’. The Handbookintroduces participatory Gender Audits as one of the many ways in which HEIs can engage with the complex and vexed terrain of gender equality on campuses. It offers a practical roadmap for institutes to push the envelope on gender justice at their campus and design interventions that are suited to the location, historical context, priorities and structural possibilities for innovation and change at each institute.

The Need for Continued Action: The WIIS Germany Statement on International Women's Day 2022

WIIS Germany has long been an institutional partner of the Munich Security Conference (MSC). In their 2022 International Women's Day Statement, Dr. Armgard von Reden reflects on the MSC's past attempts to increase gender parity in light of the photo of an all-male "CEO Lunch" that sparked media outrage for its lack of inclusivity. She vows to use WIIS Germany's platform to promote the increased participation of women at all levels of policymaking.

WIIS Brussels Voices: Women and Leadership: Two Ambassadors and NATO


In keeping with our fast-moving times and events in Ukraine, the first episode of the 2022 Women and Leadership podcast is a conversation with two NATO Ambassadors, past and present: Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Head of the Americas Department at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sweden to NATO, and Muriel Domenach,Ambassador and Permanent Representative of France to NATO.


In an animated discussion with Ilana Bet-El,the two Ambassadors explore perceptions of defense and security within foreign affairs and how they apply with regard to current tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and NATO — and the position of the EU. They also explain how and why they chose the world of defense and security world, their reflections on being a woman NATO Ambassador both now and in previous years, and the question of whether the EU is perceived as feminine on matters of defense.

Call for Proposals: Nuclear Futures Working Group


New America seeks proposals for research addressing two conceptual gaps in nuclear security thinking and policymaking. The Nuclear Futures working group will support emerging voices in the field to develop research that focuses on nuclear security policy problems through this broader lens of a changing global environment. The working group will comprise 6-8 selected early-to-mid career researchers and a small advisory committee, with the aim of providing a supportive community of practice, input from experienced voices in the field, and assistance moving work based on the research into policy debates through publications, panels, and more.

The Anti-Illicit Trade Institute (AITI) at George Mason University's Terrorism, Transnational Crime, and Corruption Center (TraCCC) is excited to host an executive training on Countering Trade-Based Money Laundering (TBML), and Illicit Financial Flows from April 5th to May 5th, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 - 5 PM EST.
