We’re bringing together a vibrant community of educators, advocates, and parents to explore efforts towards diversifying the teacher workforce. Research shows that exposure to teachers of color has a positive impact on students of all races, and particularly on students of color. Despite this, Pennsylvania has one of the lowest percentages of teachers of color in the nation -- which is also starkly disparate from our state’s student population. More teacher diversity is needed so that students feel represented in the classroom. Expect an in-depth examination of this critical issue in education, complete with keynote speakers, presentations from thought-leaders, food, music and more! Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of actionable tools and new ways of thinking that will empower them to lead positive shifts in their local education communities. We will be sharing more information over the next several weeks, including a list of guest speakers and presenters, so please follow us on social media to make sure you don’t miss any updates! If you have any questions about the event or would like to discuss highlighting your organization’s efforts on this work, please reach out to Saxon Nelson at [email protected]. LEARN MORE Teacher Diversity in Pennsylvania from 2013-14 to 2019-20 In collaboration with WHYY, RFA received seven years of teacher race/ethnicity and gender data from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. RFA cleaned this data and merged it with student data to calculate the percentages of teachers and students by race/ethnicity and gender at the state, county, district, and school levels for all Pennsylvania public schools.
