Data of the Month

HOW DOES TEXAS COMPARE ON SEX ED?

This month, we have lots of exciting news to share about our upcoming
collaborative work. The Texas Campaign partners with others across the
state to leverage local and regional resources with statewide systems
change. Read about our inspiring projects below.

TEXAS FOSTER YOUTH HEALTH INITIATIVE

The Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative (TYFI) [7]establishes, funds,
coordinates, and supports a multidisciplinary network of community partners
to develop and test cutting edge sexual health interventions for youth and
their caregivers.

All Houston-area youth-serving professionals who work with foster youth are
invited to join our Greater Houston TFYHI Stakeholder Meeting on THURSDAY,
MARCH 24, FROM 3 PM TO 4 PM. In this Stakeholder Meeting, Amber Rabines
from EveryBodyTexas will be giving a short presentation on Title X Clinics
and resources available on their website [8]. We will also share updates on
the TFYHI youth curriculum and upcoming pieces of training scheduled for
the Spring and Summer.

Contact Carolina Salmeron [email protected] or [email protected] to
register for the stakeholder meeting.

TEXAS IS READY

The Texas Is Ready Coalition [9] is composed of three organizations with a
shared vision that every Texas youth deserves the information they need for
a lifetime of healthy relationships and positive sexual health outcomes.

The Coalition provides support to School Health Advisory Committees in many
districts and presents valuable information to community members around the
state about the revisions to the sex education minimum standards.

Texas Is Ready, in partnership with the UTHealth School of Public Health
has launched iCHAMPSS [10] and will host a FREE WEBINAR, highlighting the
features of the tool, for Texas school districts on February 24, 2022 at 4
PM. REGISTER HERE! [11]

In addition, the Coalition is launching a learning collaborative for school
districts and communities in Central and Houston, Texas. The purpose is to
increase the shared body of knowledge pertaining to the steps necessary to
successfully assess, implement, and maintain sexual health education
curricula in schools, as well as ensure individual district readiness by
the start of the 2022 - 2023 school year. The iCHAMPSS tool will serve as
the foundational resource for the learning collaborative activities. IF
YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY,
PLEASE FILL OUT THE INTEREST FORM [12].

Lastly, the Coalition will host a virtual training for school districts in
and around Waco, Texas. This offering will include a lecture on the new
Health TEKS and Texas statute, as well as district-level assessments to
gauge “readiness” to implement sexual health education in the 2022 -
2023 school year. Participating school districts will receive on-going
virtual technical assistance to build their capacities to properly
implement sex ed. IF YOUR WACO-AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT WOULD LIKE TO
PARTICIPATE, PLEASE CONTACT BETH OLSON AT [email protected].

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT OUR TRAININGS!

TEXAS YOUTH-FRIENDLY INITIATIVE

The Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative (TYFI) [13] helps build the capacity of
health centers to improve care delivery to youth ages 10-24 through their
participation in an evidence-based model developed by the Adolescent Health
Initiative at the University of Michigan.

THE JANUARY TYFI SUMMIT WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH!

TYFI had approximately 30 attendees each day and received great feedback,
which we will use to plan the July summit in Houston, Texas.
