HB 5 moves forward

Dear Friend,
You may have heard, HB 5, the bill banning abortion in Florida after 15 weeks with no exceptions for rape, incest, or human trafficking, was debated on the House floor last night — and passed on a party-line vote.
Abortion rights advocates descended on the Capitol yesterday to express their opposition to the ban. We must continue to get loud, express our outrage, and do everything in our power to stop this bill from reaching the Governor’s desk.
Make no mistake, this bill is extreme and it's unconscionable . Although HB 5 would be unconstitutional if signed into law today, we know Roe v. Wade is in major jeopardy of being overturned this year. And if that happens, it could mean the end of reproductive freedom in Florida.
Since HB 5 was introduced a few weeks ago, our alumni in the legislature have been on the frontlines, speaking up against this dangerous and politically-driven abortion ban. But they can’t do it alone.
That’s why Ruth’s List is committed to electing more Democratic, pro-choice women across Florida to join the fight. Please click here to support our efforts today and help protect reproductive rights in Florida. [[link removed]]

Republican leaders are wasting no time pushing this abortion ban through the Legislature. A companion bill, SB 146, is also moving forward in the Senate, and Governor DeSantis has already signaled that he will sign this bill into law if it lands on his desk.
This legislation is the biggest threat to abortion access we’ve ever faced in Florida. If this ban were to go into effect today, the closest option for abortion care after 15 weeks would be North Carolina. Not only is that impossible for most Floridians, it’s immoral.
Can you become a monthly donor today and help us elect more reproductive rights champions across Florida who will stand up against abortion bills like HB 5? [[link removed]]
Let’s send a message that politicians have no business getting in the middle of personal medical decisions that belong to patients and their healthcare providers.
Together, we can and must use our voices to protect reproductive freedom for all Floridians.
Onward,
