Hey Indivisibles,
As you have most likely heard by now, Justice Breyer has announced his
impending retirement from the Supreme Court. Justice Breyer served nearly
30 years on the Court, in that time authoring opinions in support of
reproductive rights and against the death penalty. We are thankful for
Justice Breyer’s many years of service, and we are grateful that he
decided to step down at a moment when President Biden can preserve the
current balance of the Court.
Speaking of President Biden, almost two years ago, President Biden made a
commitment that if elected, he would nominate the first Black woman to the
Supreme Court. With Justice Breyer announcing his retirement, President
Biden now has the opportunity to make good on his promise. [ [link removed]- ]President
Biden reiterated this promise over the weekend, and it is up to us to make
sure he follows through with the nomination as soon as possible.
That is why we are asking you to do a couple of things (because it
wouldn’t be a true Indivisible email without some calls to action):
* [ [link removed]- ]If you have a Democratic senator, click here to call them and
demand that they speak out publicly and remind Biden of his
commitment. President Biden has committed to nominating the first
Black woman to the Supreme Court to be Justice Breyer's replacement,
and we need to ensure he moves quickly in this process -- it took just
eight days for Trump to nominate Amy Coney Barrett, and we cannot risk
any delays or setbacks.
* [ [link removed]- ]If you have a Republican senator (or no senators at all!), click
here to call the White House comment line and remind Biden of his
commitment yourself. There is so much at stake here, and we need to
make sure that Justice Breyer’s legacy is upheld through his
replacement. The comment line is open Tuesday through Thursday from
11am ET - 3pm ET.
* [ [link removed]- ]Chip in $10 today to help us drive up the pressure, protect the
balance of the Supreme Court, and engage in all our key advocacy
fights. We need your help to ensure Senate Dems urge Biden to nominate
a progressive Black woman and then move with all deliberate speed to
confirm her.
In recent times, the Supreme Court has become a place where Republican-led
states have challenged many landmark decisions protecting reproductive
rights, workers' rights, and environmental protections. These attacks on
our most basic human rights disproportionately affect black women and
women of color. That’s why President Biden’s announcement is extremely
important, and we need to make sure he keeps his promise.
We’re grateful for everything you can do to help make this process as
smooth as possible.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
