Justice Breyer's impending retirement reminds us of the promise Biden made 2 years ago. Hey Indivisibles,
As you have most likely heard by now, Justice Breyer has announced his impending retirement from the Supreme Court. Justice Breyer served nearly 30 years on the Court, in that time authoring opinions in support of reproductive rights and against the death penalty. We are thankful for Justice Breyer’s many years of service, and we are grateful that he decided to step down at a moment when President Biden can preserve the current balance of the Court.
Speaking of President Biden, almost two years ago, President Biden made a commitment that if elected, he would nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. With Justice Breyer announcing his retirement, President Biden now has the opportunity to make good on his promise. President Biden reiterated this promise over the weekend, and it is up to us to make sure he follows through with the nomination as soon as possible.
That is why we are asking you to do a couple of things (because it wouldn’t be a true Indivisible email without some calls to action):
In recent times, the Supreme Court has become a place where Republican-led states have challenged many landmark decisions protecting reproductive rights, workers' rights, and environmental protections. These attacks on our most basic human rights disproportionately affect black women and women of color. That’s why President Biden’s announcement is extremely important, and we need to make sure he keeps his promise.
We’re grateful for everything you can do to help make this process as smooth as possible.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
