Classes on freedom of speech and press this week Upcoming Scholar Exchanges First Amendment: Speech and Press Introductory: Wednesday, February 2, 12 p.m. ET Advanced: Wednesday, February 2, 2 p.m. ET Examine the historical context of the First Amendment and various types of speech, including symbolic speech, hate speech, and political speech. REGISTER: INTRODUCTORY REGISTER: ADVANCED Friday Session: Speech and Press Featuring David French All-Level: Friday, February 4, 1 p.m. ET Writer David French joins National Constitution Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen for a discussion on the First Amendment freedoms of speech and the press. French will also discuss his career as an author, editor, and columnist, and answer questions from participants. David French is a senior editor for The Dispatch, where he also co-hosts the weekly podcast Advisory Opinions. He is a columnist for Time and a senior fellow at the National Review Institute. French is the author or co-author of several books, including his most recent book Divided We Fall. He has also served as a senior writer for the National Review, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, a lecturer at Cornell Law School. Throughout this month, we will highlight important dates, resources, and online tools that can help you commemorate Black History Month in your classroom. Civil War and Reconstruction: A Conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. On February 3, 1870, Iowa approved the 15th Amendment, the final piece of the Reconstruction Amendments. In this video, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. discuss the Reconstruction era and its impact on history. Rosa Parks' Birthday Civil rights activist Rosa Parks was born on this day in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Read more about her life, legacy, and journey. For Educators Constitutional Conversations: Building the Foundations for Dialogue and Deliberation in the Classroom Wednesday, February 2, 6:30 – 8 p.m. ET Deepen your constitutional knowledge and enhance your strategies for fostering civil dialogue around constitutional questions with this workshop series presented by the National Constitution Center and hosted by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation. This series is scheduled for each Wednesday in February. Join us for some or all of the series.
