"Freedom is never given voluntarily by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed." King wrote that in his 1963 Letter From a Birmingham Jail. He knew what it meant to fight peacefully for one's freedom, and that the battle for equal rights would be won with kindness and understanding. It's a lesson that endures.
