Dear Friend,
Today, as Americans celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I'm reflecting on how much King treasured freedom, and how far he was willing to go to defend it.
"Freedom is never given voluntarily by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."
King wrote that in his 1963 Letter From a Birmingham Jail.
He knew what it meant to fight peacefully for one's freedom, and that the battle for equal rights would be won with kindness and understanding.
It's a lesson that endures.
