Every election cycle – even those in the so-called “off years” – offers an opportunity for voters to send a message. In some places like Austin, turnout was surprisingly high, which could suggest a level of political engagement that might keep some incumbents up late in 2020. Texas voters also overwhelmingly

approved a constitutional amendment that makes it tougher to impose a state income tax. That could indicate political opinion may not have moved as far left as some Lone Star Democrats had hoped. But two prominent young(-ish) Texas Republicans in Congress agree their party will need to make some big adjustments – and soon – if it wants to retain power in a fast-changing Texas.
