Every election cycle offers an opportunity for voters to send a message. What did they say last night?
Every election cycle – even those in the so-called “off years” – offers an opportunity for voters to send a message. In some places like Austin, turnout was surprisingly high, which could suggest a level of political engagement that might keep some incumbents up late in 2020. Texas voters also overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that makes it tougher to impose a state income tax. That could indicate political opinion may not have moved as far left as some Lone Star Democrats had hoped. But two prominent young(-ish) Texas Republicans in Congress agree their party will need to make some big adjustments – and soon – if it wants to retain power in a fast-changing Texas. Read all about it below and listen to our editors’ other picks from the past week. And until next Wednesday – we’ll see ya' on the radio.

It’s kinda funny: even though I grew up in east Texas and my dad worked for an oil company his entire career, I never knew anything about the energy industry. But for the past few years I’ve been producing “Matt Smith Mondays” for Texas Standard, where we talk to the energy insider about what’s moving the market. And since then, I’ve basically accumulated this knowledge where I find myself rattling off random industry factoids: the difference between light crude and heavy crude, venting versus flaring and more. I think it catches people off guard – I mean, it even catches me off guard sometimes! You can listen to our latest segment here.
