The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Dear John,
In the December issue of Health Affairs, an article highlighted
critiques of using "serious mental illness" as a policy construct.
"Serious Mental Illness" As A Policy Construct
In a paper released this month Jeffrey Buck outlined problems with the
use of "serious mental illness" as a policy construct
.
Buck noted how a lack of consensus around how to define those with
serious mental illness (SMI) is one major flaw to mental health
policies.
He also explained how some definitions can be problematic and cause
potentially negative consequences, such as stigma effects. Overall, he
cited a need for more data on the SMI population and proposed questions
that should be considered for mental health policies.
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Peter Pitts argues that the person
chosen asFDA Commissioner
should serve as free of the political current as possible.
