Survival Sunday: December 19, 2021

Happy weekend, friends!

Survival Sunday is a round-up of the week's news and resources for
folks who are interested in being prepared. This curated collection of
information is only available to email and Patreon subscribers.

Have a great week ahead!

Daisy

A PERSONAL NOTE

It's beginning to look a whole lot like "forget this" as every shopping
center parking lot in America is a jumble of angry drivers fruitlessly
searching for parking spaces. I did my last grocery run and picked up a
prescription and have no plans whatsoever to visit another store before
Christmas.

As the governments begin rumbling about locking us down again, I find
myself yearning for every moment of freedom I can get. For me, that's
always a road trip or a walk in the woods. No matter how cold it gets, I
like to roll down the windows, crank up the heat, and blast the stereo.
It doesn't do a whole lot for my hair but it sure improves my mood.
There's nothing like exploring someplace new for me - I love it and it's
one of the things I missed the most during the past two years, (even
though I did manage to slip out to Mexico for a year.)

I also haven't eaten in too many restaurants. It's such a rigamarole
where I live to put on a mask just to walk in, go to a table, and take
off the mask like you're not breathing the same air you were when
walking to the table.

However, I visited South Carolina last week and it was like being on a
different planet. I met a friend at probably the best Indian restaurant
I've ever visited and had absolutely incredible butter chicken and naan.
Who woulda thunk it? Delicious Indian food in small down South Carolina?

All of my presents are wrapped and either mailed or under the tree for
the people I love, my little apartment is bedecked in holiday finery,
and I'm looking forward to the big day. Unfortunately, my daughter who
lives in Canada has had to cancel her Christmas visit, as the country is
locking down again over the Omicron variant.

Yet another holiday ruined by power-hungry dictators who, I guarantee,
will not be missing their loved ones this year. Just like last year,
they'll bask in "let-them-eat-cake" hypocrisy while the rest of us have
borders between us, family members who have been terrified by the media,
and looming threats and manipulations.

WHAT I'VE BEEN READING, WATCHING, AND LISTENING TO THIS WEEK

You guys are going to think I'm crazy, but, I did a podcast with a group
out of UCLA. In it, we talked in-depth about WHY I became a prepper and
why it's so important for me to feel prepared. It was a really
affirmative portrayal and the comments from preppers who have listened
have been very positive. You can listen to it here
.

And if you'd like to start listening to more podcasts, I can help you
with that. My buddy Brian over at Mind4Survival put together an awesome
list of 20 of the best prepping and survival podcasts for you
.
If you scroll down, you can even find a really great tutorial about how
to subscribe to podcasts you enjoy (awesome for the over-50s
technophobes like me.) And don't forget to check out Brian's podcast.
Here's the most recent one
.

The podcast I listened to recently that affected me more deeply than
anything I've listened to was Joe Rogan's interview with Yeonmi Park.
She's an amazingly strong young woman who defected from North Korea with
her mother. Her story is haunting, horrible, and yet beautifully
optimistic in its own way. You can find it here on Spotify
and it's a
must-listen for anyone who loves freedom. It's worth taking the time to
sign up for the free membership.

HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE!!!

Winter Solstice is officially the shortest day of the year, but things
will get only brighter from now on!

Take advantage of the natural seasonal tendency to relax, reflect, and
plan right now...by reflecting on your garden this past year and
dreaming of a warmer time that's to come next year. This will help!

WHAT I'M DOING TO PREP THIS WEEK

To be perfectly honest, I'm spending time learning some new crafting
skills and relaxing a little. We can't always be go-go-go. The websites
always have a bit of a lull during the holidays and I'm taking advantage
of that.

Have you ever worked with that "bulky" yarn? I found some on sale and
I'm trying my hand at it. The crochet hook is a gigantic 25 mm. I
haven't a clue how many skeins of yarn I'll end up using but hopefully,
I can get my hands on enough. Anyone who knits or crochets knows how it
can go with yarn!

I'm popping my feet up, making some stuff for my house now that all the
gifts are done, and watching a few movies.

Please remember that prepping is not a 24 hour a day, 365 day a year
task. Downtime is almost as important as the time you spend getting your
preps together. Our minds and hearts need a break, especially with the
barrage of propaganda coming at us from every direction. I know most of
you are fine with this, but for those who struggle, please don't feel
guilty about also taking time to care for yourself and rest. You need
this for both your mind and body.
