Dear John,
As we approach the end of 2021, it’s unsettling to reflect on the challenges facing freedom around the world. The events of the year have been alarming:
Power grabs in Myanmar, Mali, Guinea and Sudan, as well as in Tunisia, the only democracy in the Arab world
Ethiopia—a seeming bright spot for democracy just 3 years ago—embroiled in a devastating civil war
President Ortega imprisoning every candidate opposing him in Nicaragua’s election
The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan after the country’s 20-year efforts to build a democracy
Violence at the US Capitol, intended to overturn an American election
Democracy is under siege, and people must come to its defense. Your support lets Freedom House answer the call. Please consider making a gift today to support our work.

With your help, we will continue to identify threats to freedom, spur action to counter those threats, and support activists working to defend and expand freedom.
Together, we have confronted authoritarians, supported fundamental freedoms, and protected human rights defenders. Our cause is far from hopeless, and I am heartened by the resilience of activists demanding democracy around the world. When people find themselves targeted for their activism, their journalism, their free expression, or their beliefs, Freedom House stands ready to help keep them safe.
Please continue to stand with these brave activists by making a financial contribution to Freedom House today.
