- Ethiopia—a seeming bright spot for democracy just 3 years ago—embroiled in a devastating civil war
- President Ortega imprisoning every candidate opposing him in Nicaragua’s election
- The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan after the country’s 20-year efforts to build a democracy
- Violence at the US Capitol, intended to overturn an American election
