A chance to restore protections for endangered wildlife, and other important comment periods.

Dear Friend,
Forcing the federal government to act can be a monumental task. As Earthjustice supporters know, it can take years, hundreds of thousands of letters, and administration changes to chart a new course of action.
But even once advocates have succeeded in getting the government to commit to change, it still takes time and effort. For example, the Biden administration committed to restoring the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and our methane regulations. This is all great news! But behind that news lies multiple months-long processes to actually implement the changes.
These processes include public comment periods, listening sessions, and thorough analyses of changes — which are all vitally important. When the government is being influenced by polluters, this process gives us time to check the government’s work and hold them accountable. Unfortunately, polluters do the same when we win protections — and will spare no expense to find legal loopholes allowing them to continue to profit from weak regulations.
The best way to counter this is to have everyday people like you hold the government accountable by staying engaged. We need to be there, in every comment period on every issue, reminding the government that we’re not going to let them water down proposals after the fact in favor of polluters. We’re counting on you to keep pressing for progress on the issues you care about, even when they're not in the headlines, to ensure that the change we demand is implemented.

Restore the Endangered Species Act
Last month, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) began the process to officially rescind the Trump administration’s harmful rollbacks. The USFWS and NMFS opened comment periods to gather your feedback — and we need your help to encourage them to move as quickly as possible to restore the Endangered Species Act.

Restore the People's Environmental Law
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), often referred to as the people’s environmental law, gives impacted communities the voice and the agency to determine which projects are built in their neighborhoods. In July 2020, the Trump administration gutted the law by providing public review exemptions for numerous projects, limiting public input, and allowing federal agencies to issue permits without considering long-term climate impacts. Now, the Biden administration can reverse these harmful provisions and ensure environmental justice communities can continue utilizing the law as a legal recourse to fight for clean air, clean water, and land free from contaminants and pollution.

Tell the EPA to cut methane emissions
We are living through a mass extinction of humanity’s making. Just recently, the U.S. government declared 23 more species extinct, and in the coming decades, thousands more species could disappear forever due to climate change and habitat loss. This extinction crisis means fewer pollinators for agriculture, depleted fisheries, and disappearing old growth forests, which provide a long-term, low-cost source of clean air and water.
