A new opinion piece in The Guardian hits the nail right on the head: “[B]ecause Republicans have gerrymandered districts in states across the nation, it no longer matters whether their policies defy most voters’ beliefs and needs , because incumbents’ seats are safe almost no matter what.”

The article uses the example of abortion rights: “The majority of Americans support legal abortion,” but “[r]edistricting has allowed extremism to flourish without fear of repercussion” because far-right Republicans know they’ll never have to seriously compete with a Democrat in a general election.
