A new opinion piece in The Guardian hits the nail right on the head: “[B]ecause Republicans have gerrymandered districts in states across the nation, it no longer matters whether their policies defy most voters’ beliefs and needs, because incumbents’ seats are safe almost no matter what.”
The article uses the example of abortion rights: “The majority of Americans support legal abortion,” but “[r]edistricting has allowed extremism to flourish without fear of repercussion” because far-right Republicans know they’ll never have to seriously compete with a Democrat in a general election.
But John, it’s not just abortion rights. On issue after issue, gerrymandering is allowing Republicans to block progress on issues where the vast majority of Americans agree. And until we fix that, we’re not likely to make any significant progress on issues like:
- Climate change.
- Gun violence prevention.
- Voting rights.
- And so much more.
