Immigrant NYers were excluded from yesterday’s election. It’s time to ensure they are no longer silenced in our city.

John,
Over 1 million people turned out for yesterday’s election in New York City. Yet, nearly 1 million people were kept from the polls. Despite sharing the same schools, subways, and neighborhoods, our immigrant neighbors with work authorizations are silenced in decisions about our city. Passing the Our City, Our Vote legislation in New York City will ensure that our immigrant friends, family, and neighbors are truly represented by our local government.
We secured a significant majority of co-sponsors ([link removed]) of Intro 1867, with 33 City Council members and NYC’s Public Advocate ([link removed]) pledging to support this bill.
We held a hearing on this legislation ([link removed]) , where nearly 50 people gave testimony for over 5 hours on the impact of this monumental bill.
We’ve done everything in our power to make the voices and needs of our community members heard. Now, it’s up to NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson to schedule a vote—every moment he delays a vote, he’s silencing immigrant New Yorkers.
Call on Speaker Corey Johnson to schedule a vote! ([link removed])
We’re rallying on November 4th at 10am outside Speaker Corey Johnson’s office ([link removed]) to demand he call a vote on this historic bill for New York City. We’ve been fighting to expand voting rights for years, and we’re in the final push to see this bill passed during the current City Council session before it’s too late.
Our elected officials pledge to represent our interests—but right now, they only speak for a small section of our communities. It’s past time for our immigrant New Yorkers to be lifted from the shadows of our democracy, and gain a voice in our representation.
In solidarity,
Murad Awawdeh
