John,
Over 1 million people turned out for yesterday’s election in New York City. Yet, nearly 1 million people were kept from the polls. Despite sharing the same schools, subways, and neighborhoods, our immigrant neighbors with work authorizations are silenced in decisions about our city. Passing the Our City, Our Vote legislation in New York City will ensure that our immigrant friends, family, and neighbors are truly represented by our local government.
We secured a significant majority of co-sponsors of Intro 1867, with 33 City Council members and NYC’s Public Advocate pledging to support this bill.
We held a hearing on this legislation, where nearly 50 people gave testimony for over 5 hours on the impact of this monumental bill.
We’ve done everything in our power to make the voices and needs of our community members heard. Now, it’s up to NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson to schedule a vote—every moment he delays a vote, he’s silencing immigrant New Yorkers.
