The World Leaders Summit at COP26 wrapped up with countries making a number of significant announcements and commitments to climate action. These included more than 100 countries that committed to end deforestation by 2030 and another announcement to slash methane emissions. A number of countries also made new financial pledges, including Japan, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland. Now, all eyes turn to the negotiations. “The first two days of COP26 offered the world a sharp reminder of the urgent need to accelerate climate action. You can feel a sense of excitement and determination to move the agenda forward,” said WRI President Ani Dasgupta. WRI’s State of Climate Action 2021 report finds that current climate efforts across all sectors are not enough to achieve Paris Agreement goals and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C.
