COP26 kicks off in Glasgow this week. Hear from WRI President and CEO Ani Dasgupta on what’s needed from world leaders at the climate summit.


World Leaders Summit Ramps Up Climate Action 

The World Leaders Summit at COP26 wrapped up with countries making a number of significant announcements and commitments to climate action. These included more than 100 countries that committed to end deforestation by 2030 and another announcement to slash methane emissions. A number of countries also made new financial pledges, including Japan, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland. Now, all eyes turn to the negotiations. “The first two days of COP26 offered the world a sharp reminder of the urgent need to accelerate climate action. You can feel a sense of excitement and determination to move the agenda forward,” said WRI President Ani Dasgupta. Hard Truths on the State of Climate Action 

WRI’s State of Climate Action 2021 report finds that current climate efforts across all sectors are not enough to achieve Paris Agreement goals and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C. Rapid, far-reaching and transformational change is possible, but only with the right support. The report comes as world leaders gather at the UN Climate Summit and gives them a clear picture of the transformations needed to build a better future. WRI’s Land & Carbon Lab is at the frontlines of both data and land use, arming decision-makers with the best science and technology to combat climate change, protect biodiversity and improve livelihoods. Already, a new Land & Carbon Lab dataset reveals how many trees are growing outside of dense forests, information that can revolutionize land restoration monitoring and point donors and investors towards underfunded communities that are already protecting and restoring ecosystems. Success at COP26 Hinges on Climate Finance ​​​​​

Climate finance is often one of the key elements to unlocking progress at the UN climate summits, and this year is no different. Countries must make progress on numerous thorny finance issues. Chief among these issues is the $100 billion goal: Countries need to commit their fair share to the $100 billion commitment or risk undermining trust at COP26. Read more.
