My colleagues and I in the House Haiti Caucus have wholeheartedly condemned the recent kidnappings in Haiti, and we’re calling not just on Washington, but on the international community to address the root causes of this crisis.
We call for the safe and immediate release of the American and Canadian citizens kidnapped in Haiti. However, our outrage and concern go far deeper than just this kidnapping. For too long, hundreds of Haitian civilians have been victimized by organized perpetrators terrorizing Haitian citizens.
The State Department said it bluntly: Haiti is not safe. This is why we MUST halt all deportations to Haiti, putting innocent lives in extreme danger.

It’s not enough to address this one act of violence. We must help the Haitian people work to stabilize their country, end this violence, bring the guilty to justice, and most importantly, keep the Haitian people safe.
Violence is a symptom of dysfunction, not its cause. I wish for the safe return of these kidnapped individuals and call upon my colleagues and the international community to take action to help the Haitian people bring forth accountability.
