** As One Cabinet Door Closes, Another Opens

Ahead of Halloween, we didn’t see any tricks in the Government’s Cabinet appointments this week, welcoming back some familiar and some new faces. Notable new appointments include Dominic LeBlanc as Minister of Infrastructure, Jonathan Wilkinson moving from Minister of the Environment to Minister of Natural Resources, Seamus O’Regan moving from Minister of Natural Resources to Minister of Labour, Carla Qualtrough returning as Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, and Chrystia Freeland returning as Minister of Finance. Last week saw the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council Annual General Meeting take place, with Nova Scotia Building Trades Executive Director Brad Smith elected as new chair of their board. Congratulations Brother Smith! Quebec Building Trades held their annual Convention in Laval, QC. Congratulations to all re-elected executive board members of the Quebec Provincial Council of Building Trades, including Michel Trépanier as President & Patrick Bérubé as Directeur Général.

Affiliates also gathered in St. John’s, Newfoundland for Trades NL annual Education Conference October 28-29. CBTU executive board members Kevin Bryenton and Sean Strickland gave addresses at the conference.

CBTU are pushing several key issues with the new Federal Government including support for skilled workforce mobility tax deduction, changes to Employment Insurance and the need to support workers through the transitioning energy sector. If Canada is to have a truly successful transition to a net-zero economy by 2050, we cannot afford to leave skilled Canadians behind — especially oil and gas workers. Tom Reid has an op-ed in the Hill Times ([link removed]) on the importance of nuclear power for meeting Canada’s climate goals. I also wrote about this important issue in the Calgary Herald here ([link removed]) ahead of the global COP26 meeting next week. On Tuesday I will be speaking at the National Energy Summit ([link removed]) on the importance of a

À l'approche d'Halloween, nous n'avons pas vu d'entourloupe dans les nominations au Cabinet du gouvernement cette semaine, accueillant des visages familiers et de nouveaux visages. Parmi les nouvelles nominations notables, citons Dominic LeBlanc en tant que ministre de l'Infrastructure, Jonathan Wilkinson qui passe de ministre de l'Environnement à ministre des Ressources naturelles, Seamus O'Regan qui passe de ministre des Ressources naturelles à ministre du Travail, Carla Qualtrough qui revient en tant que ministre de l'Emploi, du Développement de la main-d'œuvre et de l'Inclusion des personnes en situation de handicapés, et Chrystia Freeland qui revient en tant que ministre des Finances. La semaine dernière, l'assemblée générale annuelle du Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council a eu lieu, et le directeur exécutif du Nova Scotia Building Trades, Brad Smith, a été élu nouveau président du conseil. Félicitations au frère Smith! Le Conseil provincial des métiers de la construction du Québec a tenu son congrès annuel à Laval, QC. Félicitations à tous les membres réélus du conseil exécutif du Conseil provincial des métiers de la construction du Québec, y compris Michel Trépanier comme président et Patrick Bérubé comme directeur général.

Les affiliés se sont également réunis à St. John's, Terre-Neuve, pour la conférence annuelle sur l'éducation de Trades NL les 28 et 29 octobre.

Les SMCC font pression sur le nouveau gouvernement fédéral sur plusieurs choses clés, notamment le soutien à la déduction fiscale pour la mobilité de la main-d'œuvre qualifiée, les changements à l'assurance-emploi et la nécessité de soutenir les travailleurs dans le secteur énergétique en transition. Si le Canada veut réussir sa transition vers une économie Net Zéro d'ici 2050, nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre d'abandonner les Canadiens qualifiés, en particulier les travailleurs du pétrole et du gaz. Tom Reid a publié une tribune dans le Hill Times ([link removed]) sur l'importance de l'énergie nucléaire pour atteindre les objectifs climatiques du Canada. J'ai aussi écrit un article sur cette question importante dans le Calgary Herald ici ([link removed]) , en prévision de la réunion mondiale COP26 qui aura lieu l
