What is a lobbyist?

Lobbyists aren’t inherently bad, but when corporations and special
interest groups like the NRA get involved, we start to get worried. When
these interests want something done by the government or to uphold the
status quo, they hire lobbyists to represent their interests to Congress.

Why are lobbyists so scary?

The problem comes when lobbyists and the companies who employ them use
money to buy influence within our government—like when the NRA lobbies
against bills that would regulate guns and make schools safer. And right
now, Big Pharma is fiercely lobbying against new legislation that would
allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices. There are thousands of lobbyists
for Big Oil, Big Pharma, and hundreds of other special interest groups in
Congress right now, John, and
many of them are putting profits before people.

Special interests are drowning out the voices of working people.

Winning an election takes a lot of money nowadays. Last year, total
federal spending in the 2020 election reached $14.4 billion—the most
expensive election in U.S. history. Candidates have to raise money faster
than they’re spending it if they want to have any chance of winning their
election.

The money that industries, corporations, and issue groups spend on
lobbying is just a drop in the bucket compared to what they can get in
return if their lobbyists are successful—that’s really
