Parliamentary Diary
Dear Friend,
Tories playing all the tricks and no treats!
I hope you are well. You may have been expecting my Parliamentary Diary last Friday. However, given the tragic news of Sir David Amess’ death, all communications were suspended.
I’ve found it incredibly hard to wrap my head around the news. David was such a kind man who always found the time to stop and say hello to Cadi and I in the halls of Westminster. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
It’s been a very busy few weeks, with Parliament sitting all this week, including Friday to vote on ending fire and rehire practices. And it seems the Tories are pulling out all the tricks and no treats this October:
* Voting against banning fire and rehire and to protect workers’ rights.
* Poor handling of HGV driver crisis continues weeks before Christmas.
* Hitting hard-working people's wallets in the midst of a cost of living crisis.
* Failing to take violence against women and girls seriously yet again.
This Conservative Government is letting the UK and Cardiff North down and I'll continue to stand up against it. If you require any assistance, please do not hesitate get in touch with me on

Cardiff North News
The chaos we're experiencing around the country is starting to bite here in Cardiff North. A survey was conducted locally on Cardiff North's experiences with petrol supply, food price rises and increase of energy bills and the results are below.

You will have all seen the horrific revelations in the news of women having their own bodies used against them in nightclubs and bars as they're being spiked through covert injections. Here in Cardiff, as well as across the country, young people are standing up and saying enough is enough. The Girls Night In campaign is calling for change and for greater protections for women. I stand in solidarity with the campaign and will be working to help keep women safe.

Speeding Street Surgery
Another great turnout last week in Llanishen to discuss speeding concerns and what measures we can implement to improve safety in their community. Thank you to Cabinet Member for Transport and Planning, Caro Wild for coming along to speak to residents with Julie and I.
Prior to meeting, Julie and I wrote to local residents asking for their views on a series of measures residents put forward at our first street surgery. We were able to discuss those options in the meeting, as well the Council's proposal to have permits for residents enforced by cameras. We will continue to work with residents and the Council to ensure that a consensus is reached on the best way forward for the community.
Maggie's In Parliament
Great to join Maggie's Cancer Centre in Parliament recently. We’re so lucky to have Maggie's Cardiff here in Cardiff North who do a fantastic job of supporting our loved ones when they need it most. Thank you for everything that you do!
Universal Credit slashed
Earlier this month, the UK Government cut over £1000 a year in Universal Credit for over 5000 families in Cardiff North. The £20 uplift has been a lifeline for millions of families.
Ending support during a cost of living crisis and a pandemic with increased job insecurity is callous. The Government must urgently reconsider and I'll continue to push for this.
Green Flag Awarded for Whitchurch Community Garden!
Fantastic to see the hard work of volunteers at Whitchurch Community Garden pay off as they were awarded with the Green Flag again. The community garden is a fantastic space and I'd like to thank all involved for working so hard to make it the community asset it is.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
Fantastic to join Julie Morgan MS for her 21st Macmillan coffee morning earlier this month. It was a great turnout with lots of cake consumed! Thank you to all involved in organising and for the generous donations.
Parliamentary News
UK Govt Votes Against Ending Fire & Rehire
On Friday, I took a stand against businesses behaving badly and voted to end unacceptable fire and rehire tactics. Workers deserve better than being forced to accept worse pay and conditions or face the sack. The UK Government shamefully voted against it.
G4S has "lost control" of inmates
Conditions in youth custody are deteriorating dangerously under this Conservative Government. We recently saw Oakhill Secure Training Centre, operated by G4S subject to an Urgent Notification following a report of appalling conditions for young offenders. This comes just days after a similar shocking report on Rainsbrook STC.

Last week I also visited Youth Offenders' Institution Parc in Bridgend. A prison officer told me he felt that senior management at Oakhill had "lost control", which we've seen leading to poor behaviour and violence.
It's clear from speaking to young offenders at Parc that crime and prevention services in communities are vital and how cuts to these services have been devastating to keeping young people out of the youth justice system.
Justice System Failing Women and Girls
The Justice System under the Tories is failing women and girls at every turn. This is national scandal and cannot go on. Victims must be seen, heard, protected and supported and that's why I'm pushing for a Victims' Bill.

Westminster Dog of the Year
Westminster Dog of the Year is next week and there’s still time to vote! Cadi entered this year, but please consider supporting me by voting for David Amess and his beautiful French Bulldog, Vivienne in the wake of his tragic death.

Show Racism the Red Card
So proud to support Show Racism the Red Card. Racism has no place in our communities and I’ll continue to stand against it wherever we may see it. Please consider supporting their anti-racism campaign if you can.
End Puppy Smuggling
Great to join Dogs Trust with Cadi in Parliament to support their campaign to end puppy smuggling. Many animal-loving constituents in Cardiff North have contacted me on this issue and I’ll continue to stand up for animal welfare and strengthening of animal rights.
Farewell James!
Incredibly sad to be saying farewell to James who is leaving his role as my Parliamentary Assistant today after two fantastic years. James has played such an important role in the team and he will be sorely missed, but I know he will go on to great things in his new role!
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
