Earlier this week, the Senate voted on the Freedom to Vote Act, a bold and urgent piece of legislation that would strengthen voting rights and counter the GOP-led voter suppression that's happening across the country.

At perhaps one of the most pressing moments for American democracy, the legislation failed to pass. Mitch McConnell used the filibuster, and not a single Republican senator joined Democrats to bolster our most basic democratic freedom.

We are living through the consequences of Republican obstruction in real time: The Supreme Court's conservative majority already dealt a death blow to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and in 2021 alone, Republicans have introduced more than 425 bills with restrictive voting provisions in 49 states. Our fundamental right to vote is under a coordinated, widespread, and effective attack from the Republican Party – and we won't be able to stop their voter suppression unless we eliminate the filibuster.

Friend, the U.S. Senate is often described as the world's greatest deliberative body. It's the embodiment of democracy in our country, and really, the rest of the world. But if the world's most deliberative body is hamstrung from protecting the very democracy it exists to uphold, it's no longer working properly. We must reclaim our cherished democratic institution by getting rid of the filibuster once and for all.

I know you've spoken out on this issue before, but in the face of Senate Republicans filibustering legislation that would stop voter suppression, it is beyond urgent that this team speaks out again – and as often as it takes – until the filibuster is a relic of the past. So please, will you be one of the 650 signers I need on my petition before midnight tonight? I'm counting on you:

The soul of the Republican Party has been lost to extremism, and the filibuster is the most effective tactic they have to ensure that the minority of our nation rules through that extremism. For the sake of our democracy, the filibuster must be eliminated. Thank you for joining me in this fight.
