One Year Since the Tree of Life Shooting

Tomorrow marks one year since the devastating Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, PA. We honor and remember the 11 people who were killed and the 6 who were injured in the horrifying act of anti-Semitism and white nationalism. The link between guns and hate is deadly, and anti-Semitism has been on the rise [[link removed]] :

* In 2017, anti-Semitic incidents rose almost 60% — the largest single year increase on record.

* Every state in the country reported at least one anti-Semitic incident, with 1,986 cases of harassment, vandalism, or physical assaults against Jews and Jewish institutions in 2017.

* Only 7 states prevent individuals convicted of misdemeanor hate or bias motivated crimes from purchasing and possessing firearms.

Those who commit hate crimes should never be able to get their hands on a gun. The tragic truth is that easy access to guns makes hate lethal. To remember and honor the lives lost, read more about how you can support survivors of gun violence [[link removed]] .

This week, Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL) co-sponsored the federal assault weapons ban! That means we are now only three cosponsors shy of passing this bill through the House. The bill would ban the sale, manufacturing, or ownership of assault weapons as well as high-capacity magazines. We can all agree that weapons of war have no place in our communities. They are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Congress has the power to end the senseless bloodshed weapons of war cause. Join us in demanding Congress ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines ! [[link removed]]

Justice for Atatiana Jefferson: A National Day of Outrage on Monday, October 28

Nearly two weeks ago, Atatiana Jefferson was shot and killed in her own home by a police officer. Police violence is gun violence, and Atatiana is just one of many Black women who deserve justice. Black people are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white people. For Black women, the rate is 1.4 times more likely. To remember Atatiana, a National Day of Outrage will be held on Monday, October 28, in 20 cities across the United States. Learn more and find a rally near you [[link removed]] .

It’s Time to Repeal PLCAA!

Today is the 14th anniversary of a harmful law called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). PLCAA is a federal law that gives the gun industry special protections unlike any other industry. For that reason, many would-be litigants do not bring their claims to court. And the net effect makes the gun industry less subject to justice and less inclined to adopt responsible, lifesaving business practices. Read more [[link removed]] .

The legislation focuses on the Black and Brown communities that are impacted by daily gun violence. Horsford for introducing this lifesaving piece of legislation. Click here to thank both for their leadership on the issue!
