This Week in Brady News

Dear John,

Tomorrow marks one year since the devastating Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, PA. We honor and remember the 11 people who were killed and the 6 who were injured in the horrifying act of anti-Semitism and white nationalism.

The link between guns and hate is deadly, and anti-Semitism has been on the rise:

Those who commit hate crimes should never be able to get their hands on a gun. The tragic truth is that easy access to guns makes hate lethal. To remember and honor the lives lost, read more about how you can support survivors of gun violence.

Justice for Atatiana Jefferson: A National Day of Outrage on Monday, Oct. 28

Nearly two weeks ago, Atatiana Jefferson was shot and killed in her own home by a police officer. Police violence is gun violence, and Atatiana is just one of many Black women who deserve justice. Black people are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white people. For Black women, the rate is 1.4 times more likely. To remember Atatiana, a National Day of Outrage will be held on Monday, October 28, in 20 cities across the country, including Washington, D.C. Learn more and find a rally near you.

On Monday, Brady Vice President of Programs Kyleanne Hunter (third from left) joined Rep. Maloney for the launch of a new report, titled “Guns and Suicide.” The report, produced by the U.S. Joint Economic Committee, finds that access to a gun triples the risk of death by suicide.

It’s Past Time to Repeal PLCAA!

Today is the 14th anniversary of a harmful law called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). PLCAA is a federal law that gives the gun industry special protections unlike any other industry. For that reason, many would-be litigants do not bring their claims to court. And the net effect makes the gun industry less subject to justice and less inclined to adopt responsible, lifesaving business practices. Read more

Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Steven Horsford

This week, Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Steven Horsford introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, groundbreaking legislation to reduce urban gun violence in American cities. This vital bill would invest $90 million each year for 10 years in community intervention and prevention programs. Research shows that a combination of community-oriented intervention programs can reduce gun violence rates in urban cities in half in as little as two years.

Send a tweet to thank Sen. Booker and Rep. Horsford
for introducing this vital piece of legislation.

Brady Quote of the Week 🎤

“We are so proud to endorse long-standing gun safety advocate Omar Montgomery for Mayor of Aurora. His dedication to the issue of gun violence prevention and his leadership in the Aurora community will help save lives. We know not only that his opponent is wrong for Colorado, but that Omar Montgomery is right and we look forward to working alongside him to create the safer community that Aurora deserves.”

—Brady President Kris Brown on our endorsement of Omar Montgomery
