Hey John,We’re sure you’ve been following the news around the devastating California offshore oil spill. Between 25,000 and 131,000 gallons of oil spilled in the waters after a pipeline ruptured. This has had a devastating impact on the southern California ecosystem and wildlife.

That’s why SEEC members in Congress immediately sprang into action. This week, SEEC member Rep. Raúl Grijalva convened a markup in the House Natural Resources Committee to consider two new pieces of legislation to strengthen regulation and oversight of offshore oil drilling. And both bills were also sponsored by SEEC members!

mandating
frequent
inspections
and
requiring
pipelines
to
be
equipped
with
a
leak
detection
system.

Act
would
require
offshore
drilling
operators
to
report
failures
of
safety
systems
directly
to
the
Secretary
of
the
Interior,
who
would
then
be
required
to
disclose
these
reports
to
the
public.

These common sense bills passed the committee but without a single Republican voting in support.
