Hey John,
We’re sure you’ve been following the news around the devastating California offshore oil spill. Between 25,000 and 131,000 gallons of oil spilled in the waters after a pipeline ruptured. This has had a devastating impact on the southern California ecosystem and wildlife.
That’s why SEEC members in Congress immediately sprang into action. This week, SEEC member Rep. Raúl Grijalva convened a markup in the House Natural Resources Committee to consider two new pieces of legislation to strengthen regulation and oversight of offshore oil drilling. And both bills were also sponsored by SEEC members!
SEEC member Rep. Brownley’s Offshore Pipeline Safety Act would improve oversight of offshore pipelines, including mandating frequent inspections and requiring pipelines to be equipped with a leak detection system.
SEEC Vice Chair Rep. McEachin’s Offshore Accountability Act would require offshore drilling operators to report failures of safety systems directly to the Secretary of the Interior, who would then be required to disclose these reports to the public.
These common sense bills passed the committee but without a single Republican voting in support.
John — SEEC members in Congress walk the walk when it comes to protecting our environment, fighting fossil fuel interests, and protecting our public lands and waters from reckless drilling.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
