These promising survey results highlight a strong desire among parents to protect their school-aged children from COVID-19 but also the need for increased efforts for continued education about the benefits of vaccination. School nurses have played a vital role in helping families navigate the pandemic and we stand ready to help. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights Survey Finds Majority of Parents of Children 5-11 Plan to Get Them the COVID-19 Vaccine Two-thirds of parents with children ages 5-11 years old say they are likely to get them vaccinated against COVID-19 once a vaccine is authorized for that age group, according to new survey data of parents with children ages 5-18 years old, released today by the COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project – a group of more than 225 leading organizations including the National Association of School Nurses. All candidates have completed the nominating committee process. In the upcoming election, NASN members will select a vice president and a nominating committee member. The election will be conducted online from March 15, 2022 to April 15, 2022. LEARN MORE Clinical Practice Guideline: Medication Administration in Schools School nurses care for 56.4 million students in elementary, middle, and high school across the United States, 25% of whom have chronic conditions and many of whom require medication during the school day. NASN's guideline seeks to create a uniform clinical practice for the administration of medication in schools, and to give the school nurse evidence-based recommendations for the safe care of Pre-K-12 students who receive medications during the day. LEARN MORE COVID-19 Updates Save the Date: October 26 Webinar on School-Located Vaccinations Don't miss this webinar: Opportunities to Improve Student & Community Health Through School-Located Vaccinations Tuesday October 26, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. EST NEW COVID-19 Booster Update The Pfizer-BioN-Tech COVID-19 vaccine is the only vaccine currently approved as a booster. Data from a small clinical trial shows that a Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot increased the immune response in trial participants who finished their primary series six months earlier. With an increased immune response, people should have improved protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Occupations that put employees at greater risk, including healthcare and education, may get a booster shot. Learn more. New CDC Resource on Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (MIS-C) CDC has developed and tested new materials to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children including factsheets for parents. COVID-19 and Students, Frequently Asked Questions: A resource designed to answer some questions families may have about students' health during COVID-19 and to support families with links to find additional resources. Improving School Community & Student Health Nurses Asked to Complete Survey on Racism in the Workplace The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing is calling nurses from all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities to complete a survey about racism in the workplace to help capture perceptions and lived experiences to further understand the impact of racism on the nursing profession and patient outcomes. National School Psychology Week is November 8-12 During the week of November 8-12, schools throughout the U.S. will celebrate National School Psychology Week to highlight the important work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive. This year's theme is "Let's Get in Gear." The theme's acronym provides a challenge to grow both personally and professionally. It encourages us to engage in best practices and advocate for children's access to mental health and learning supports. Opportunities & Networking Webinar Coadministration of Influenza, COVID-19, and Other Routine Vaccines During the COVID-19 pandemic, annual influenza (flu) vaccination is critical to help prevent flu and related complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 vaccines may be given at the same time as other vaccines, including influenza vaccines. American Academy of Pediatrics Return to Learn After Concussion ECHO: Telementoring for School Nurses (.75 CNE) Returning to Learn (RTL) after a concussion presents unique challenges for professionals who work with children. Much responsibility falls on school nurses. In 2019, using the evidence-based telementoring program, Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), the American Academy of Pediatrics implemented RTL ECHO to improve school-based professionals’ management of students with concussions. By taking this course, learners will become comfortable and confident with the utilization of a Project ECHO model of dissemination of Return to Learn after concussion resources.
