President Donald Trump's brazen disregard for long-established laws and protocols appears to be a disease that is spreading: His allies have become increasingly emboldened in their actions and reactions to the House of Representatives' impeachment inquiry. From refusing to comply with subpoenas, to preventing key witnesses from testifying, to orchestrating a stunt that involved 47 lawmakers breaching a secure room to delay the testimony of a key witness, Trump and his allies are employing every tactic they can-no matter how legally offensive-to preserve their power, not American democracy. Without the career diplomats and whistleblowers who are courageously coming forward to unmask the abuses of power that they have witnessed, Trump and his allies will continue to erode the most fundamental principle of our democracy: the rule of law.

Turkey's Syria Shambles

President Donald Trump's October 6, 2019, decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northeastern Syria has thrown a previously stabilized part of the war-torn country back into chaos. This rash decision paved the way for a long-threatened Turkish incursion into Syria. As predicted by outside experts and professionals within the U.S. government, the incursion has sparked further violence, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and forced the United States' Syrian Democratic Forces partners to cut a deal with the Assad regime and its Russian backers.
