Our leaders need to rise up and fight the climate crisis.

Dear Friend,
At last week’s United Nations General Assembly, President Biden called for international cooperation to fight the climate crisis and touted his administration’s climate progress. On the ground, where we’ve faced a summer of climate-fueled wildfires, floods, and hurricanes, it’s clear that our government must do more to combat this existential threat to humanity and our planet.
Experts warn that we must take unprecedented action to transform our economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. While the Biden administration and Congress have taken some important steps forward, it isn’t nearly enough to protect and preserve life on this planet. We are counting on President Biden and Congress to do everything in their power to move our country away from fossil fuels towards zero-emissions and 100% clean energy. We are heartened to see the President using his influence to press for passage of the Build Back Better Act that would result in the largest investment our nation has ever made in climate and environmental justice. Now, Congress needs to step up and pass it.
But at the same time, the President is refusing to stop construction of the Line 3 Pipeline, allowing the Dakota Access Pipeline to continue operating, supporting drilling in the Western Arctic, and opened up the Gulf to oil and gas leasing days after Hurricane Ida hit its shores. Our leaders can’t simply echo the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s declaration that the climate crisis is “code red for humanity,” they must match words with action. We’re going to keep making noise and pushing for the change we know we need, and we’re not going to stop until our leaders get the message that enough is enough – it’s time for bold action. Join us in this fight, and help convince our leaders they must rise to the occasion.

Pass the Build Back Better Act
The climate crisis is accelerating, and we must dramatically cut our carbon emissions if we hope to preserve a livable planet. Meanwhile, our country is facing the intersecting crises of COVID-19, economic injustice, and racial injustice. We must meet the moment with bold action that matches the scale of these crises. That means transforming our economy to build a pollution-free, 100% clean energy future. Tell your members of Congress to pass the Build Back Better Act to invest big in a sustainable and just future.

Electrify the Postal Service
The U.S. Postal Service is planning to make a major purchase to add up to 165,000 new vehicles to its fleet – the largest civilian fleet in the world. At this critical moment for climate and public health, USPS has an opportunity to invest in zero-emissions electric vehicles that will cut dangerous air pollution in almost every neighborhood across the country. But instead, the Trump-appointed Postmaster General who still runs the USPS is proposing to double down on polluting trucks that harm communities and our planet. These new postal trucks will be on the roads for decades – and we need to make sure they are electric. Join us in calling on the Postal Service to commit to 100% electric vehicles.

Stop the Line 3 Pipeline
The Anishinaabe people of northern Minnesota have waged a seven-year effort to stop the Line 3 pipeline from being built in the heart of territory where they retain the rights to hunt, fish, and harvest wild rice and other plants. The proposed pipeline would carry 760,000 barrels of tar sands of oil per day, destroying sacred places and locking in decades of rising climate pollution at a time when we cannot afford any more. Tell the Biden administration to support the people, not the polluters, and stop the Line 3 pipeline.

Protect our public lands and waters from fossil fuels
Vast swaths of public lands and waters have been opened up to private corporations to drill for oil and gas and to mine for coal. As a result, nearly 25% of climate-cooking emissions from the United States come from fossil fuels pumped or mined from lands and waters that belong to the public. It doesn’t have to be this way. The Biden administration has committed to tackling the climate crisis, and we need to help turn these words into action.
