How Does Gender Impact Teen Pregnancy?

Between the ages of 9 and 13, many other episodes forced her to recognize
that she was not equal to boys, that they had more freedom, that some men
could be dangerous, and that she was vulnerable.

Despite that, she rebelled against expectations.

To Understand Healthy Masculity, Look at Africa

#MeToo has been a much-needed wake-up call about male violence against
women, building on the work of thousands of women’s rights activists and
NGOs around the world who, for decades, have been demanding full equality
for women.

But we need to talk about the men.

Texas Is Ready

Texas Is Ready has released a community toolkit that serves as a
guide for Texas parents, students, and community members to support health
education in their school districts. DOWNLOAD IT TODAY [15]!

The Texas Is Ready Coalition held a collaborative meeting on Wednesday,
September 15, where both Texas-based and national sex ed training and
technical assistance providers received a high-level overview of the
current policy landscape, learned about how Texas Is Ready is preparing
school districts and communities to implement the newly adopted sex ed
TEKS, and completed a survey to convey interest and ideas for a Texas Is
Ready service-delivery directory.

In addition, Texas Is Ready will host a webinar education session for
members of the Texas Association of School Boards on October 7,
highlighting the recent policy changes as they relate to sex ed in Texas,
as well as the resources available to help school districts and communities
implement quality sex ed to Texas students. Texas Is Ready will also
present and exhibit at TASB | TASA txEDCON21 [16], in Dallas, on September
24 and September 25.

designed empowering interventions to help caregivers lead conversations
about healthy relationships and provided more than 50 hours of training
across the state. Learn more about our successes this past year with our
12-month progress report [18] and what’s to come in the near future.

Register here [19] for a statewide, virtual Brave Conversations training
for caregivers of youth in care, scheduled for October 5, 9 AM – 1 PM.

CHART OF THE MONTH

Breastfeeding a new baby is associated with health benefits, but can also
come with challenges. Do teen parents have the support they need to
breastfeed? Data suggests that we can do better. According to birth
certificate data from 2019, 84% of newborn babies were breastfed when they
were discharged from the hospital. However, mothers in their 30s were most
likely to nurse their babies. Among teens aged 15-19, 73% breastfed their
baby in the hospital -- a strong majority, but still below the rates of
older mothers.

For parents facing breastfeeding challenges, support from doulas, lactation
consultants, and pediatricians can help smooth the path, as does having
supportive family or community members. In Texas, WIC offers lactation
support centers [20], which are specialized centers where parents can
receive breastfeeding help.
