Debt – over $13.5 trillion collectively owed at the end of 2018

– continues to drown millions of young people, families, and retirees, with the impact of this crushing burden disproportionately borne by Black and Brown communities. Families with Latinx heads were more likely to have debt payments exceeding 40 percent of their income

, and 27 percent of Black Americans were late on their debts compared with 15 percent of White Americans
