Dr. Una Clarke here -- immigrant, former NYC Council Member, and mother to Yvette. I want to talk to you about the work Yvette has been doing for New York’s 9th district and why I’m proud to see her carry the spirit of my work to Congress. 

Thirty years after immigrating from Jamaica in 1958, I was elected to the NYC Council. I spent ten years sponsoring legislation on issues ranging from economic development to child welfare, using my voice to protect and empower marginalized folks in my community. 

Yvette’s commitment to ensuring that our district and country are equitable and afford opportunities to the working class makes me incredibly proud. In her 15 years in Congress, Yvette has: 


Been a staunch advocate against the defunding of Planned Parenthood, which plays an essential role in the health and well-being of many families in our district 

Introduced the Affordable Housing and Area Median Income Fairness Act to cut rent in subsidized developments and ensure that New Yorkers do not have to choose between putting food on the table and having a roof over their heads 

Worked across the aisle to provide relief to temporary protected status (TPS) eligible individuals because she knows that immigrants should not live in fear of deportation

Helped pass the Opioid Addiction Action Plan Act to enhance the treatment and prevention of opioid addiction which affects so many of our community members
