Through our three Impact Centers — Domestic Excellence, Global Leadership, and our Engagement Agenda — we focus on developing leaders, advancing policy, and taking action to solve today's most pressing challenges.

The past few weeks have been both challenging and emotional for all of us. I’m sure you’ve been watching the humanitarian crisis and tragedy unfold in Afghanistan ‒ a country whose people we care so deeply about. It’s difficult to watch as the country loses 20 years of progress in the matter of just a few weeks.
While our hearts are heavy, we at the Bush Institute will not waver in our commitment to protect and support the Afghan people who worked alongside us for so many years – in particular the Afghan women and girls <[link removed]> who were able to make so much progress in the past two decades. And while we are saddened by the happenings in Afghanistan, let us not forget the progress we have made the past few months in other areas.

A Call for Immigration Reform <[link removed]>
In conjunction with the release of Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants , the Bush Institute has been hard at work pushing for policy and practice change that comprehensively modernizes and improves our immigration system.
In May, a diverse group of organizations joined the Bush Institute in a letter to Congress <[link removed]> urging policymakers to holistically reform the immigration system with the future prosperity of the Nation in mind.

Reimagining American Democracy <[link removed]>
This quarter, the Bush Institute partnered with Freedom House, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Issue One to create a new speaker series titled Reimagining American Democracy.
The first episode <[link removed]> took a broad look at the challenges facing American democracy. The second episode <[link removed]> focused on voting, specifically on ensuring full access for citizens and ballot security, and the third episode <[link removed]> discussed disinformation and what it will take to restore a sense of shared purpose through facts and ultimately revive a stronger democratic system.

Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries <[link removed]>
In May, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries gave $ 1.025 million to 205 school libraries across the country so that they could extend, update, and diversify their book and print collections. Mrs. Bush appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show <[link removed]> to share this exciting news <[link removed]> along with the announcement of Mrs. Bush’s 2021 Summer Reading List for Kids <[link removed]>, which highlighted books focused on diversity, inclusion, and kindness.
