Quarter Two 2021
Bush Institute Briefing
Through our three Impact Centers — Domestic Excellence, Global Leadership, and our Engagement Agenda — we focus on developing leaders, advancing policy, and taking action to solve today's most pressing challenges.

The past few weeks have been both challenging and emotional for all of us. I’m sure you’ve been watching the humanitarian crisis and tragedy unfold in Afghanistan ‒ a country whose people we care so deeply about. It’s difficult to watch as the country loses 20 years of progress in the matter of just a few weeks.

While our hearts are heavy, we at the Bush Institute will not waver in our commitment to protect and support the Afghan people who worked alongside us for so many years – in particular the Afghan women and girls who were able to make so much progress in the past two decades. And while we are saddened by the happenings in Afghanistan, let us not forget the progress we have made the past few months in other areas.

Policy In focus

A Call for Immigration Reform

In conjunction with the release of Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants, the Bush Institute has been hard at work pushing for policy and practice change that comprehensively modernizes and improves our immigration system.

In May, a diverse group of organizations joined the Bush Institute in a letter to Congress urging policymakers to holistically reform the immigration system with the future prosperity of the Nation in mind.

Reimagining American Democracy

This quarter, the Bush Institute partnered with Freedom House, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Issue One to create a new speaker series titled Reimagining American Democracy.

The first episode took a broad look at the challenges facing American democracy. The second episode focused on voting, specifically on ensuring full access for citizens and ballot security, and the third episode discussed disinformation and what it will take to restore a sense of shared purpose through facts and ultimately revive a stronger democratic system.

Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries

In May, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries gave $1.025 million to 205 school libraries across the country so that they could extend, update, and diversify their book and print collections. Mrs. Bush appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to share this exciting news along with the announcement of Mrs. Bush’s 2021 Summer Reading List for Kids, which highlighted books focused on diversity, inclusion, and kindness.
