Dear John,
Early this morning, Senate Bill 8—a law that effectively bans abortion in Texas—went into effect. This law is outrageous and dangerous, and even though the Supreme Court failed to act last night, it's blatantly unconstitutional.
SB 8 bans abortion after six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant. What is just as shocking is that this law could also let ANYONE—people like anti-abortion extremists—sue abortion providers and anyone that helps someone get an abortion, even friends, family members, or clinic volunteers.
Let’s be very clear—everyone should be able to get the abortion care they need, when they need it. We’re not done fighting to protect abortion access. And neither are our allies on the ground.
Our friends in Texas have planned an art performance protest to raise awareness about SB 8 going into effect. You can click here [[link removed]] to find a planned protest in Texas and around the country. If you cannot make it in person, you can join the protest virtually. [[link removed]]
And here’s a list of the many amazing organizations working on the ground to protect abortion access for Texans:
Bridge Collective – abortion fund in Central Texas.
West Fund – abortion fund serving West Texas and New Mexico.
Frontera Fund – abortion fund serving the Rio Grande Valley.
Buckle Bunnies Fund – mutual aid organization for Texans who need abortions.
Texas Equal Access Fund – abortion fund for Texans.
Fund Texas Choice – fund to cover transportation costs in Texas.
Supporting Your Sistahs (SYS) through The Afiya Center – abortion fund centering Black women and girls in Texas
Lilith Fund – abortion fund for Texans.
Clinic Access Support Network – abortion fund for people who need abortions in the Houston area.
The Stigma Relief Fund through Whole Woman’s Health Alliance – abortion provider.
Jane’s Due Process – helps young Texans navigate parental consent laws to access abortion.
