Together we bested the pesticide industry — let's keep up the momentum.

Dear Friend,
On Wednesday, the Biden administration followed through on a federal court order by banning all food uses of chlorpyrifos, a harmful pesticide that damages children’s brains and poisons farmworkers. This victory was far from a given, as the pesticide industry’s lobbyists were working overtime to convince the EPA to stall.
But when we put out an urgent call for help, Earthjustice supporters answered with 50,000 letters and tweets to the EPA in less than three months. It’s hard to overstate the degree to which this outpouring of support turned things around — up until the news broke, it looked like the pesticide industry had already swayed the EPA.
But the industry’s lobbyists and money were no match for the power of the people. Responding to a question about why the EPA’s action to ban chlorpyrifos is happening without delay, the Assistant Administrator for Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention said that “it speaks to the impatience and the frustration that the courts and environmental groups and farmworkers have with the agency.” In other words, you were heard at the highest levels of government — and helped make it clear that there was only one acceptable course of action.
This doesn’t mean we’re going to get the outcome we want every time on every issue. But it does show that when we organize and work together we can go toe to toe with some of the most powerful corporations in the world. That’s the energy we must continue to bring to the fights that lie ahead, and I hope you’ll stick with us as we keep pushing for the better world we know we deserve.

Tell the EPA to strengthen clean car standards
Biden’s EPA recently proposed standards that recover crucial lost ground, but stop short of the ambition we need. The EPA must enact the strongest possible standards to put the U.S. on a path to an all-electric, zero-emissions transportation future — and to meet President Biden’s goal of cutting climate pollution in half by 2030.

Thank EPA Administrator Regan for banning chlorpyrifos
On August 20, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it will ban all food uses of chlorpyrifos, protecting the health of children, farmworkers, and everyone in the country who eats food. Join us in thanking the administration for sticking up for public health.

Demand a moratorium on new coal leases
Eliminating the use of all fossil fuels is key to fighting the climate crisis, and that starts with coal — one of the worst sources of climate-heating pollution in the world. The Obama administration recognized this and implemented a moratorium on new federal coal leases, but the Trump administration undid the moratorium to protect polluter profits — prompting an Earthjustice lawsuit. Now, the Biden administration has announced it is taking another look at federal coal policies. Tell it to undo the previous administration’s damage.

Time for big, bold, and equitable climate investments
The climate crisis is accelerating, and we must dramatically cut our carbon emissions if we hope to preserve a livable planet. Meanwhile, our country is facing the intersecting crises of COVID-19, economic injustice, and racial injustice. We must meet the moment with bold action that matches the scale of these crises. That means transforming our economy to build a pollution-free, 100% clean energy future. Tell your members of Congress it’s time to invest big in a sustainable and just future.
