Dear Friend, |
On Wednesday, the Biden administration followed through on a federal court order by banning all food uses of chlorpyrifos, a harmful pesticide that damages children’s brains and poisons farmworkers. This victory was far from a given, as the pesticide industry’s lobbyists were working overtime to convince the EPA to stall. |
But when we put out an urgent call for help, Earthjustice supporters answered with 50,000 letters and tweets to the EPA in less than three months. It’s hard to overstate the degree to which this outpouring of support turned things around — up until the news broke, it looked like the pesticide industry had already swayed the EPA. |
But the industry’s lobbyists and money were no match for the power of the people. Responding to a question about why the EPA’s action to ban chlorpyrifos is happening without delay, the Assistant Administrator for Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention said that “it speaks to the impatience and the frustration that the courts and environmental groups and farmworkers have with the agency.” In other words, you were heard at the highest levels of government — and helped make it clear that there was only one acceptable course of action. |
This doesn’t mean we’re going to get the outcome we want every time on every issue. But it does show that when we organize and work together we can go toe to toe with some of the most powerful corporations in the world. That’s the energy we must continue to bring to the fights that lie ahead, and I hope you’ll stick with us as we keep pushing for the better world we know we deserve. |
