Tina Peters, a Mesa County clerk, is accused of allowing information to be leaked to Ron Watkins, a major Q-Anon backer considered by some to be the mastermind behind Q-Anon. The Colorado Democratic Secretary of State's office is investigating a security breach where a county clerk allegedly allowed sensitive election information to be leaked to an unauthorized person. Tina Peters, a county clerk in Mesa County, Colorado, and self-proclaimed "Trump Truther", allowed security cameras guarding voting machines to be turned off for two months, which facilitated an unauthorized person to gain access to the sensitive/confidential voting information. On August 2nd, this illegally obtained information regarding sensitive voting procedures was leaked to the social media channel of a famous QAnon backer, Ron Watkins. Many journalists and researchers familiar with the topic speculate that Ron and his father are the masterminds behind the entire 'Q-Anon' operation. Mesa County Democrats have begun calling for the removal of Peters from her position of authority. A sentiment backed by Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold who stated, "This is troubling for the entire state of Colorado to have someone in a trusted position, literally trusted to protect democracy, allow this type of situation to occur." Needless to say, this security breach is unacceptable. A clerk leaking secure information to a known Q-Anon supporter shines light upon the precarious state in which our democracy currently finds itself. This violation of election security did not take place within a vacuum and it is worth noting that the Congresswoman for Mesa County, Lauren Boebert, is an ardent supporter of Q-Anon, who continues to push the lie that the 2020 Election was stolen from Trump. To combat these breaches, we need to support strong Democratic leaders like, Secretary of State Griswold, who will take the necessary precautions to keep our elections secure.
