John,

Like the rest of America, I am heartbroken by the news that Rep. Elijah Cummings had passed away.Rep. Cummings was a champion our country and our democracy.

For me, his leadership to prevent gun violence will be forever remembered. He was a tireless advocate against hate — especially the hate that fuels America’s gun violence epidemic  —  and a positive voice when so many were negative. His words from this summer stay with me:

“As a country, we finally must say that enough is enough. That we are done with the hateful rhetoric. That we are done with the mass shootings. That we are done with the white supremacists, domestic terrorists who are terrorizing our country and fighting against everything America stands for.” - Rep. Elijah Cummings

Rep. Cummings knew the promise of what American could be, and he used every breath to fight for justice and a safer America for all. Time and time again, we witnessed Rep. Cummings put party politics aside to fight for our communities. His thoughtful and hopeful leadership was so critical in a moment when we face so many challenges to our democracy.

I hope that you’ll take a moment today to think about Rep. Cummings and recall his legacy as a champion for democracy, as a tireless fighter against gun violence, and as a voice of moral authority against hate.

In his absence, we must all channel his voice and continue his fight for a safer, more just America.

May he rest in power.

- Kris
