John,
Like the rest of America, I am heartbroken by the news that Rep. Elijah Cummings has passed away.
Rep. Cummings was a champion for our country and our democracy. For me, his leadership to prevent gun violence will be forever remembered. He was a tireless advocate against hate — especially the hate that fuels America’s gun violence epidemic — and a positive voice when so many were negative. His words from this summer stay with me:
|
Rep. Cummings knew the promise of what American could be, and he used every breath to fight for justice and a safer America for all. Time and time again, we witnessed Rep. Cummings put party politics aside to fight for our communities. His thoughtful and hopeful leadership was so critical in a moment when we face so many challenges to our democracy.
I hope that you’ll take a moment today to think about Rep. Cummings and recall his legacy as a champion for democracy, as a tireless fighter against gun violence, and as a voice of moral authority against hate. In his absence, we must all channel his voice and continue his fight for a safer, more just America.
May he rest in power.
- Kris
