In 2019 the Kansas Supreme Court ruled that access to abortion is a fundamental right under our state's constitution. The 2019 ruling was sent to district court for review due to a 2015 law signed into place by Sam Brownback. The law bans a standard procedure for second trimester abortions. On Wednesday, a Shawnee County District judge ruled the 2015 ban “unconstitutional and unenforceable.” According to Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, this ban would have made it criminal for doctors to use their best medical judgement.
This ruling is a huge step forward in the effort to maintain reproductive equity in Kansas. Kansans must have access to safe and legal abortion. The choice is up to the pregnant person-- it is a decision to be made between the individual and their doctor.
It is the national consensus that the GOP's effort to ban or limit abortion is unconstitutional, yet Kansas Republicans remain hellbent on stripping their constituents of fundamental reproductive rights. The Kansas GOP voted to put a disastrous anti-abortion amendment on the 2022 August primary ballot. The “Value Them Both” amendment hides behind a misleading name- this proposed amendment absolutely does not value the fundamental reproductive rights of the pregnant person. The amendment would reverse the 2019 Kansas Supreme Court ruling that grants Kansans access to safe and legal abortion.

The Kansas primary generally draws in smaller groups of voters. These voters are usually conservative. It is more crucial than ever that Democrats across Kansas mobilize and show up to the polls for the 2022 August primary to vote against this hateful amendment. The Kansas Democratic Party has hit the ground running in terms of maintaining the Democratic momentum in Kansas, but we need help from supporters like you to continue our efforts.
