Vaccine misinformation: Let's talk facts

We've been made aware there are anti-Covid vaccine leaflets and newspapers being posted through residents' doors. This information does not appear to be based on scientific evidence and could put you and your family at risk of a serious illness or death.

Getting vaccinated significantly increases your chance of survival and recovery, and it's the best possible way of stopping the spread of the virus.

We're making every effort to combat misinformation about getting vaccinated, and we're committed to making sure you are fully informed. Here is some useful information from the NHS:
* Covid-19 vaccines are not experimental vaccines and are approved for use in the UK.
* All Covid vaccines have met strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness, and have passed all stages of research, clinical trials and approval. Here's why the NHS says the Covid vaccine is safe ([link removed])
* You can get vaccinated if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying for a baby or intend to try for a baby in future ([link removed])
* The Covid vaccines are safe for all faiths, do not contain egg or animal products and are not Haram ([link removed])

Next Steps - Good luck on exam results' week

If you’re the parent of a young person, you’ll know they’ll be collecting their A-Level and GCSE results next week.

We’d like to wish everyone the best of luck and reassure them that, whatever the outcome, there are lots of opportunities available to them.

It’s been a very strange time and many of them have missed months of education due to the pandemic and they might be feeling a little more anxious than usual.

Whether they are going to continue their studies or look for advice on other work-related opportunities, there’s lots of support out there in Oldham to help them on the right path.

There are a range of learning opportunities available, including both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace. There’s also apprenticeships, traineeships, higher education and much more.

Hoax callers

We've been getting reports about people knocking on doors, claiming to be from Oldham Council carrying out welfare checks.

These are not council workers. While we do carry out welfare checks, we always carry ID and show it. If a suspicious caller has knocked on your door, please call the police on 101.

Too many babies die each year in Oldham because of unsafe sleeping. Are you a parent or caregiver and could you help to keep Oldham babies safe?

Safe sleeping is putting your baby to sleep in a way that protects them from dangers such as choking, suffocating or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). We ant to know how we can inform people in a way that reduces the number of babies falling victim to such terrible cicumstances.

Illegal fireworks - here's what to do

We have been getting reports about fireworks being set off past 11pm. It is illegal to set off fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am.

Using fireworks illegally carries a fine of up to £5,000 or 6 months in prison and can also incur a £90 on-the-spot fine. The only exclusions to these times are Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight, and New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am.

Any incidents of illegal fireworks use should be reported to the police on 101.
