Corporations continue to demand that they be allowed to build and expand fracked gas projects even though New York passed landmark climate legislation in 2019, and parts of our world are on fire while others are under water. The effects of climate change can no longer be ignored. It is time to fight “business as usual” when it comes to fossil fuel buildout.

New York State, thanks to the tireless work of grassroots groups, successfully stopped the Williams Pipeline and opposed other false, fossil-fuel solutions. Nonetheless, National Grid and Con Edison are proposing to bring more fracked gas into NYC by building the “Iroquois” Expansion by Compression Project (ExC). We oppose this project ([link removed]) which harms communities all along the fracked gas fuel chain, and we oppose naming a dangerous, dirty pipeline after Indigenous people whose land was stolen from them, which is why we always put “Iroquois” in quotes.

The ExC project would significantly increase the amount of fracked gas being pushed through the 30-year-old pipeline from the compressor station in Athens, NY to NYC ([link removed]) . Four new turbines required at the Athens, Dover, Brookfield, and Milford compressor stations will increase pressure in the aging pipeline, create even more air pollution for local communities, and take us further away from meeting our climate goals.
COMMENT TO HELP STOP THE "IROQUOIS" ExC PROJECT TODAY! ([link removed])
We urge you to submit comments to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement ([link removed]) for the ExC project. Comments are due by Monday, August 9. The Environmental Impact Statement will be considered in the decision-making process to determine whether the ExC gas expansion project moves forward. FERC’s own analysis says that the project would negatively contribute to climate change. Now we need to let FERC know ([link removed]) that in order to meet our climate goals we need to begin reducing gas use and retiring gas infrastructure now, not years down the road.

Instructions to send a message:

Go to FERC’s e-Comment site ([link removed]) , provide your information, and click “Authorize.” You will receive an email with a link you can click to submit your comment. Make sure to enter the Docket Number CP20-48-000 in the docket number field, then type out your comment. Here’s a sample comment suggested by Sierra Club that you can edit and/or expand:

“I am opposed to the Iroquois Expansion by Compression Project (ExC) as it would violate New York’s climate laws and exacerbate climate change. FERC’s own Environmental Impact Statement in Docket Number CP20-48-000 says the ExC project to expand four existing gas compressor stations in New York and Connecticut will increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and will contribute to climate change. Climate change is a grave threat in every aspect of our lives. Compressor stations also endanger the health and safety of communities, and expanding the capacity of compressor stations increases those risks. I urge FERC to respond by rejecting this project. The risks to people and the planet are too great."
