Corporations continue to demand that they be allowed to build and expand fracked gas projects even though New York passed landmark climate legislation in 2019, and parts of our world are on fire while others are under water. The effects of climate change can no longer be ignored. It is time to fight “business as usual” when it comes to fossil fuel buildout.
New York State, thanks to the tireless work of grassroots groups, successfully stopped the Williams Pipeline and opposed other false, fossil-fuel solutions. Nonetheless, National Grid and Con Edison are proposing to bring more fracked gas into NYC by building the “Iroquois” Expansion by Compression Project (ExC). We oppose this project which harms communities all along the fracked gas fuel chain, and we oppose naming a dangerous, dirty pipeline after Indigenous people whose land was stolen from them, which is why we always put “Iroquois” in quotes.
The ExC project would significantly increase the amount of fracked gas being pushed through the 30-year-old pipeline from the compressor station in Athens, NY to NYC. Four new turbines required at the Athens, Dover, Brookfield, and Milford compressor stations will increase pressure in the aging pipeline, create even more air pollution for local communities, and take us further away from meeting our climate goals.
