AHC Board Names Susan Cunningham Interim CEO We are delighted to announce the AHC Board has appointed Susan Cunningham as our interim CEO. Susan will take the helm immediately, providing leadership, stability, and oversight during our national search for a permanent CEO. As a seasoned executive and community leader, Susan brings just the right experience for this moment. She is a proven change manager and community builder, with more than 25 years of experience leading mission-driven organizations through challenges and change, while building strong community engagement and trust. Her experience includes working with McKinsey & Company, the IRS, and SEED Foundation. Susan brings both a longstanding commitment to affordable housing and multi-sector experience designing, constructing, and operating buildings. True to AHC’s mission, Cunningham has long championed sustainable design and operation of affordable housing across the DC Metropolitan Area. A long-time Arlington County resident herself, Susan is deeply familiar with Arlington and the broader region. She serves on Arlington's Joint Facilities Advisory Committee, the Lee Highway Alliance, and is a member of the NAACP Arlington Branch. Regionally she has worked closely with VPP + Raise DC, the Maya Angelou School in Washington, DC, ChildTrends in Montgomery County, and the SEED School in Baltimore. Susan's charge is to work hand-in-hand with the AHC Board and staff to lead the organization through this time of transition. She will bring an independent lens to assess our internal culture and processes and focus on delivering consistently high-quality service to our residents, most urgently at The Serrano. We are proud of AHC's mission and track record. As we build the new AHC leadership team, we are doubling down on building trust with our residents and the communities we serve. We appreciate your support and continued engagement as we start AHC's next chapter! Read more Summer Camp is In-Person and On-the-Go! AHC's Summer Camp is baaaack. And the students are thrilled. When asked what she's enjoying about Summer Camp, one little girl said with a big grin, "Everything!" It's no surprise students are having a great time being together. The wonderful thing about AHC's Summer Camp is that our campers don't even realize how much they are learning while they are having fun. For instance, the Water Balloon Pop Sight Word game challenges students to find sight words and pop a water balloon. Perfect activity to have fun, beat the heat (and practice sight words)! Another engaging game requires students to match math equations to correct answers using sticky notes. Students are motivated by seeing all their correct sticky notes "add up." :) Along with building brain power, AHC's Summer Camp also includes lots of physical activities. Students are enjoying playing soccer as part of this year's "Olympics" theme and through Educational Theater Company's imaginative group activities, such as imitating a chariot from Ancient Greek Olympics. New Affordable Homes Underway in Arlington Construction has begun on Arlington View Terrace East, a $39 million redevelopment on the eastern end of Columbia Pike. The project will provide 77 new apartments, more than doubling the original 30 units. Expected to be completed by early 2023, the new building will welcome families earning between 30% and 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Resident amenities include a new fitness room, community room, courtyard, and free WiFi. The new building will feature sustainable design elements, including a projected 190-panel solar system. Arlington View Terrace East is also AHC’s First Energy Star Certified Building and includes an extensive green roof to support stormwater management. This project was made possible by AHC Inc.’s local and national partners. Arlington View Terrace East won an allocation of $2.03 million in competitive tax credits from Virginia Housing (VHDA), which will generate $19.5 million in tax credit equity. The Arlington County Board allocated up to $8.23 million in loan and grant funding, and the project was also selected for a $900,000 loan from the Virginia Housing Trust Fund. Other funders include Virginia Housing (VHDA), Capital One, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD), Hudson Housing, and NeighborWorks America. Additional partners include Cunningham and Quill Architects, Harkins Builders, Walter L Phillips, civil engineer and Klein Hornig, LLC, financing council. A rising 6th grader, Taamre says she "poured her heart and soul" into the poem. She is also an artist and is working on a graphic novel. She says "I like both words and art because words are used to communicate, but art can give you more words than you can write." After moving from Africa, Taamre and her mother and father are AHC residents in Arlington. Thank you to HAND and Enterprise Community Partners for sponsoring the award!
